Welcome to 5th Grade Reading
Dear DAAS 5th Grade Families,
I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer! I am so excited to start a new school year as your child’s 5th grade reading teacher. This is my second year at DAAS as the 5th grade reading teacher. I am honored to guide your child on his/her educational journey. I look forward to developing a relation with each student and family.
During this school year, it is very important to have YOUR support. Having your support will result in a positive influence on your child’s learning. Fifth grade is both exciting and challenging! Working with you as partners is the key to a successful learning experience for all of us. Each child is a unique learner, I will provide a setting that is developmentally appropriate for their needs. It is imperative that we stay in contact throughout this school year.
Reading: In reading class, I will have the opportunity to guide your child through our Journey’s curriculum. Within their 5th grade reading books, they will read exciting and informative stories. Your child will be given a spelling list at the beginning of every week, along with a spelling test and reading test every Friday on the skills we have covered that week. They will have the opportunity to work in small groups and learning centers to complete hand on activities that reinforces the lesson for the week. Your child will be learning many skills such as, comparing and contrasting, sequencing, cause and effect, whole/part relationship, describing, defining in context, and classifying. They will be expected to complete daily homework on time.
It will be extremely beneficial for your child to read 15-20 minutes each night!! Please find some exciting books for your child to engage in. Additionally, it is important to discuss good work habits with your child. Your child is expected to complete his/her assignments daily. The homework will be listed on the board and explained in detail. It is their responsibility to write down their assignment and as questions if necessary. If you do not receive assignment regularly, please question your child about his/her progress and contact me immediately. The purpose of homework is to reinforce important concepts.
Each student will be supplied with a homework planner to keep track of their assignments. Furthermore, progress reports are sent home mid-way through the grading periods
Please do not hesitate to contact me via phone or email. You may also set up appointments to meet with me in person.
